Simon…good homily…but one more item which could be mentioned, is that sometimes, the priest cannot be understood because of an accent…or he is unable to get down to the people’s level, in other words he’s too intellectual. One of your brothers…

Another thought… sometimes the priest is not “intellectual enough” and appeals only to emotion. As Pope Benedict XVI constantly demonstrates by his homilies, faith and reason go hand in hand. If we rely on emotion alone, we may attract some but emotion will never bring lasting fruit. “Boze will punish” might work for a 5 year old, but a mature understanding of God relationship with us implies our loving response (the meaning of the word “devotion”) to God is what matters most. How that loving response is lived is ours to figure out. So, the homily should be well crafted and not off the cuff musings. A well thought out message, rooted in the priest’s prayer-life, is the net that catches souls along with grace that operates through the messenger and despite the messenger.
