(Kate Kline – AM-POL Eagle) Corpus Christi Church of Buffalo preserves pieces of St. Barbara’s church and in turn gains history and beauty in its church. Corpus Christi acquired the painting of Joseph Mazur’s Most Blessed Trinity and an altar table from the closed St. Barbara’s Church in Lackawanna and proudly displays them in its chapel.

The chapel was used for the past 80 years as a convent by the Franciscan sisters, according to Father Anzelm Chalupka. It was restored two years ago, and is presently the church’s chapel. It holds about 60 people and is used Monday through Saturday for evening Masses and is open and lit for prayer and adoration.

Both the painting and the atlar were made in the 1920s in the style of the Polish highlander, according to Father Anzelm.

The altar is beautifully hand made and is adorned with many intricate wood carvings, including a lamb with a cross, in the center of the altar. “There are many altars from the past few decades that are very cheap looking and don’t show art. If you look at this altar, you see beauty and harmony,” Father Anzelm said.

Help Corpus Christi help others this Christmas season

Posted by admin on 12/09/2008 Leave a Comment

A warm “giving tree” is now in place in the church vestibule, to be decorated with warm hats, mittens, and gloves. These will be offered to the needy of our neighborhood during the winter months.

A bin for donations of non-perishable food items has also been placed in the vestibule, and it will remain there until the end of January.

Corpus Christi will distribute Christmas toys to families in need again this year. If you have toys to donate please drop them off (unwrapped) at the rectory during office hours, or put them in the toy bin in the vestibule. Anyone who would like to help with these outreach projects, please call Bruce at 876-9629.

Thanks for all you do.

Next Sunday, December 14, 2008 we will joyfully celebrate the Rite of Acceptance and the Rite of Welcoming at the 11:30 a.m. Mass.

Members of our RCIA group will declare their intention to the Church, and the Church in turn will formally welcome them into the life of the community. Let us support our candidates with fervent prayer and warm friendship!
