Door of Mercy to Open at Corpus Christi, March 20
Corpus Christi Church is one of eight churches in the Diocese of Buffalo to be chosen as a pilgrimage site during the Jubilee Year of Mercy.
On March 20, Palm Sunday, a ceremonial Opening of the Holy Door of Mercy will take place at 11 a.m. at Corpus Christi. Fr. Michał Czyżewski, Administrator, invites all Catholics in the Diocese to the ceremony, which will be followed by a special Mass celebrated in English and in Polish.
“Here, then, is the reason for the Jubilee: because this is the time for mercy. It is the favorable time to heal wounds…”, said Pope Francis, adding “By Crossing the threshold of the Holy Door, we will find the strength to embrace God’s mercy and dedicate ourselves to being merciful with others as the Father has been with us.”
“I am the Door” Jesus said (Jn 10:7). Passing through a Holy Door symbolizes our leaving the world outside and entering into the realm of salvation. John Paul II said,” it invokes the passage from sin into grace which every Christian is called to accomplish”.
Passing through a Holy Door and consciously performing five Conditions lets us experience and receive a “plenary indulgence”. A plenary indulgence lessens the effects of our sin here on earth. “To gain an indulgence is to experience the holiness of the Church, who bestows upon all the fruits of Christ’s redemption, so that God’s love and forgiveness may extend everywhere. Let us live this Jubilee intensely; begging the Father to forgive our sins and to bathe us in His merciful “indulgence” explains Pope Francis.
The Five Conditions are: experiencing the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Receiving Holy Communion, praying for the Pope, rejecting the attachment to sin and passage through a Holy Door.
Corpus Christi Church is located one block from the Broadway Market, at 199 Clark St. in Buffalo. Ample parking is available. For more information about Holy Week and Easter at Corpus Christi Church, call 896-1050, or visit the Parish website at CorpusChristiBuffalo.org.
