Very few churches in the U.S.A. can be proud of such a treasure.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>Roman Kujawa, internationally renowned art conservator, on his first visit to Corpus Christi Church <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dear Friend of Corpus Christi:<\/p>\n<p>In the fall of 2010, internationally known art conservator Roman Kujawa came by invitation to Corpus Christi to view the condition of the remarkable mural of the Disput\u00e0 in the semi-dome of the church.\u00a0 He came away confirming what the parish has long maintained \u2013 that the church is a treasure-trove of significant history, art and architecture that is rare among houses of worship in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The Disput\u00e0 was painted in 1923 by Marion Rzeznik, in collaboration with Gonippo Raggi, both of whom were considered\u00a0premier, 20th century artists of ecclesiastical\u00a0paintings. The mural, which is a signature element of the church interior,\u00a0is a rendering of a\u00a0Vatican masterpiece\u00a0by celebrated, Renaissance painter Raphael Santi.\u00a0\u00a0Since its installation, this breathtaking artwork has sustained considerable damage from roof leaks, age and\u00a0interim repairs which proved to\u00a0do more harm than good.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, a complete restoration of the church\u2019s slate roof eliminated the destructive leaks and has finally allowed\u00a0the parish to move forward with the mural\u2019s conservation.\u00a0 Related repairs must accompany this high-profile project to prevent recurring damage to the painting.\u00a0 This work includes new drainage tile along the church foundation, re-pointing of the basement walls, and installation of\u00a0new membrane waterproofing along the foundation perimeter.\u00a0The proposed work is essential to reverse significant deterioration from water damage and mold that threaten the building&#8217;s structural integrity, and ultimately the brilliant interior decoration which includes the <em>Disput\u00e0<\/em>.\u00a0 In the interest of safety and practical concerns, an upgrade of the church&#8217;s aged electrical system is also included, for enhanced lighting of the mural and surrounding spaces.
